Ralph Fred Schulz died Wednesday, December 27, 2006 in Springville, Utah. Ralph was born on January 20, 1928 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Alfred Paul Schulz and Hildegard Siefert. Alfred and Hildegard came to America from East Germany in 1926 but due to the lack of jobs during the depression, the Schulz family moved back to Chemnitz, East Germany when Ralph was three.
Ralph and brother Harold served in Hitler's youth army. Ralph graduated from a German college in pharmacy and immediately sent to the Russian front to fight at the age of 16. He was captured three times and escaped three times and found his way to the American sector.
A Black American soldier captured Ralph and learned that he was an American. He provided German papers that allowed Ralph to get back to the Russian sector where he found his brother, Harold. The boys barely escaped to Bremerhaven, Germany and made their way back to Salt Lake City.
Ralph was drafted into the United States Army as a Master Sergeant and was sent back to Germany as a medic and translator and served for 15 years.
Ralph graduated from the U of U in pharmacy. He married Ingret Kratz and had three daughters, they later divorced
Ralph married Millie Price Bushman in 1974, they purchased a home in Springville and later discovered that the home was built by Millie's gg grandparents and spent the next 33 years restoring it.
Ralph is survived by his wife, Millie, daughters; Maritta "Micky" (David) Johnson and Melinda Ainsworth, stepchildren; J. Russ Bushman, Douglas (Kim) Bushman, Derek (Cheryl) Bushman, Robin (Jim) Buckwalter, David (Noriko) Bushman; brother Harold (Christine) Schulz and Leroy (Ruth Ann) Schulz. Ralph was preceded in death by his daughter Heidi.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 2, 2006 at 12:00 in the Springville Presbyterian Church, 245 South 200 East, Springville, Utah. A viewing will be held from 11:00 to 11:45 prior to the service. Interment at Utah Veterans Memorial Park, Bluffdale.
