Our beloved father, grandfather, uncle and friend passed away peacefully November 29, 2011 surrounded by his loved ones. Born February 24, 1923 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Henry Fielding and Josephine Breeze Burton.
He served as a captain in the Army Air Corp during World War II. He was an accomplished pilot, awarded the Air Medal and 3 bronze stars. He took many dangerous flights, with courage, across the Mediterranean during the closing months of the war.
After the war he returned to Utah and married his sweetheart Anna Joy Bushman, in the Salt Lake Temple on August 28, 1946. He raised six children with his loving wife.
He became a master builder, building homes in Utah, Alaska, California, and Hawaii. He built churches and commercial buildings in the Eastern Seaboard, Hawaii, California, the South Pacific and Utah.
Richard was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and loved going to the temple. Married only 4 months, he accepted a mission call to serve in the western states, later he was joined by his wife. In 1962 Richard and his family were called on a mission to build chapels in Poughkeepsie, New York and State College, Pennsylvania.
He loved traveling with his wife, and visited temples all over the world. He loved Hawaii and moved his family to the "Aloha State". He remembered the years spent in the islands as some of the best, walking on the beach looking for glass balls with his wife, golfing, and just enjoying life. Gramps, as he was loving nicknamed by his grandchildren, loved "talking story", telling jokes, and meeting new people. He immersed himself in woodworking, photography, and oil painting.
He enjoyed the companionship of his son, Richard Fred. Together they loved watching BYU football, devotions and Jazz basketball.
Gramps loved temple work and in his later years he felt blessed to be able to spend long days in the Salt Lake Temple. When he was no longer able to travel to the temple he spent his days extracting names to be used for temple work.
He was preceded in death by his wife, his daughter Debra (Greg Savage). He is survived by his sons Richard and Mark, daughters Bonnie (John Vander Veur), Kris (Jeff Weiss), Shellie (Bruce Bedney), 15 grandchildren, and 28 great-grandchildren.
