Rick Kent Mitchell, 51, passed away Thursday, August 5, 2010 at his home surrounded by his family after a six and a half year battle with cancer. Rick had an amazingly positive attitude throughout his life, even during his illness, and will always be remembered for that. He was born on August 26, 1958 in Cedar City, Utah to Kent Whitney and Marcella Tullis Mitchell. He grew up in Washington Terrace and graduated from Bonneville High School in 1976. Rick served an LDS mission in Santiago, Chile. After returning from his mission he married Marla Christine Tullis on June 25, 1981 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They have been happily married for 29 years and were blessed with five children. Rick graduated from Weber State College in 1984 with a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting. He then worked for the Utah State Tax Commission for 26 years as an auditor and audit manager. As part of his job, he was able to travel throughout country. He also took part in lighting the "W" for Weber State University's homecoming week for 29 years. Rick was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, serving in many positions including the First Counselor in his Bishopric. He also spent many years as the finance clerk. He loved spending time with his family very much; he especially enjoyed playing with his grandchildren. As an avid "do-it-yourselfer," Rick was always working on home improvement projects. He also enjoyed traveling with his family and showing them around the country. Rick is survived by his wife Marla; children Christina (Paul) Bachman, Jenny, Brandon (currently serving an LDS mission in Ecuador) and Cody; grandsons Kort and Cohen; parents Kent and Marcella; and siblings Lana (Larry) Braegger, Craig (Arlette), Jeff (Carmalee), and Curt (Sheri). He was preceded in death by his sister Janine, son Justin, and lifelong friend Lynn Kraaima. Funeral services will be on Tuesday, August 10 at 11AM at the Weber LDS Stake Center, 5855 Skyline Drive. Friends may visit with the family during the viewing at the Stake Center on Monday, August 9 from 6 - 8PM and on Tuesday, August 10 from 10 - 10:45AM. Interment will be at Lindquist's Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd., Ogden.
