Ruth M. Hoopes

Ruth May Whetstone Hoopes escaped the ugly hold that Alzheimer's had on her body by leaving this earth to be in the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on December 29, 2007.
Mom was born in Hugoton, Kansas, October 24, 1919 to Walter H. and Zora Ann Whetstone. She was the oldest of 7 children. Her family farmed land surrounded by farms owned by extended family but when the "dust bowl" happened, her family moved to northern California. Mom quit school after 10th grade to help care for the younger siblings. She married Victor H. Hoopes on December 18, 1940. Dad passed away on September 3, 2007.
After World War II, mom and dad moved to Salt Lake City where they raised 4 children. Mom was a great cook and generous in her hospitality. Her fried chicken was surpassed by none. Dad's mother passed down a "steamed pudding" recipe from Danish ancestors and Mom was able to prepare it to perfection! Dad shot trap at the Magna Gun Club for years and Mom, of course, took her turn for several years as the head cook there. Many people remember her for her great food and friendly personality.
Mom was a Cub Scout den mother for years and was presented with the "Silver Beaver" award in recognition of her service. Mom and Dad hosted the organizational meeting of Granger Christian Church in the summer of 1957 and were members of that church for many years, serving as Sunday school teachers, kitchen workers and in other leadership positions. They moved their membership to Southeast Christian Church in the early 90's where their local children and grandchildren attended.
In recent years, Mom took special care of Dad as his body aged. She was a faithful caregiver and loved Dad in all she did for him. As her health declined, she still put Dad first.
Survived by her children: Linda (Steve) Packer, Lance (Diana), Stephen (Bonnie) and Gary (Keiko); 9 grandchildren and 6 (plus 1 on the way) great grandchildren; 1 brother Robert Whetstone (Phoenix, AZ) and 1 sister Ruby Cooley (Kouts, IL).
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, 3 brothers, 1 sister and 1 son, Royal Hoopes.
The family would like to thank Hospice for Utah and the West Jordan Beehive Home for their love and tender care given to our mother.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, at 11:00 a.m., January 5, 2007 at Southeast Christian Church, 1881 Vine Street, Salt Lake City, Utah. Friends may call 1 hour prior to services. In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged to the Alzheimer's Association
