Sarah Anne Nelson Jones, age 90, died of natural causes on February 10, 2009. She was born August 30, 1918 in Garfield, UT to Edward Emil Nelson and Alvena Pettee. Her family moved to Salt Lake City when she was two years old and resided at 120 H Street. She attended Stewart School, East High and graduated from the University of Utah in 1939, where she was president of Chi Omega Sorority. Sarah Anne was very active in Girl Scouts along with her mother who was Girl Scout Commissioner. She cherished life-long friendships that she developed at the Stewart School, in Girl Scouts (Pinarite Troop 50), and in her sorority. Some of her fondest memories were of summers spent in Hanover, NH visiting her grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. She married William Jack Jones, M.D. on April 3, 1941 in Newton, MA. They lived in Philadelphia, PA while Jack finished his medical training before making their home in Salt Lake City. They lived briefly in Fircrest, WA while Jack served as an army doctor. After Jack's untimely death in 1965, Sarah Anne returned to college and earned a primary teaching certificate. She was a teacher and reading specialist at Washington, Webster, and Dilworth Schools in the Salt Lake School District for 13 years, retiring in 1980. Sarah Anne was very proud of her New England heritage and furnished her homes with beautiful family heirlooms from New Hampshire. After her retirement from teaching, she enjoyed bridge, crossword puzzles, spending time with her four grandchildren, and traveling around the world to far-off places including Europe, Scandinavia, China, India, Africa, New Zealand, South America, and Mexico. (Thanks for the t-shirts, Nana!) She was preceded in death by her parents, brother William P. Nelson, sister Elizabeth "Bets" Hutchinson, and brother- and sisters-in-law Dan Hutchinson, Lib Nelson and Ruth Nelson. She is survived by her daughters Linda (Fred) Oswald and Cynthia Jones, M.D. (Stephen Prather, M.D.), son David, Salt Lake City, grandchildren Wyatt (Heather Eliassen) Oswald, Winchester, MA, Lindsey Oswald, Jack Prather, Robert Prather, Salt Lake City, great-granddaughter Alta Carolina Oswald, Winchester, MA, and wonderful nieces and nephews. She will be buried next to her parents and brother in Durham, NH. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Sarah Anne's name to a charity of your choice. The family would like to thank the kind caregivers at Christus St. Joseph Villa and Hearts for Hospice for their loving care.
