In Loving Memory of our mom, Sharon Lee Weindorf Hawkins. She was born on September 10, 1941, in Oakland, CA, and peacefully passed away at home on June 19, 2024, surrounded by her loving children. Throughout the day, they shared cherished memories, stories, love, laughter and tears.
Sharon was the beloved mother of Jenny & Ryan Young, Sarah Sawaya, Matt & Liz Hawkins, Annie & John Scott, and cherished grandmother, affectionately known as "Mammy," to Spencer, Benjamin, and Nathan Young; Jordan and Taylor Sawaya; Katie, Amelia, and Juliette Hawkins; and Emma Scott. She was also dearly loved by her brother Fred & Judy Weindorf and many cousins from her childhood in Oakland. Sharon was preceded in death by her parents, Vera & Roy Weindorf, and her husband, Ray Hawkins, who passed just two months previously.
Sharon's life was a testament to love, service, and devotion to her family, friends, and faith. She met Ray Hawkins at a Valentine's Day dance at BYU. Their marriage of 62 years began in the Logan temple on Ray’s birthday, August 6, 1962 and was a union of love and faith that shone as a beautiful example through the years.
A dedicated homemaker, Sharon filled her home with the aroma of homemade rolls, often made for others, embodying her selfless spirit. She was known for her infectious laughter, which could light up any room. Sharon spent countless hours researching her own family history and that of others, demonstrating her deep commitment to preserving memories and connections.
Sharon was a faithful servant of the Lord, serving diligently in several church auxiliaries on a ward and stake level, and as a supportive companion to her husband during his service as Mission President in the Korea Seoul mission from 1977 to 1980. She delighted in Christmas traditions, sewing, canning salsa, peaches, pears, and pickled beets, and enjoyed spy novels and action movies. She loved traveling, and visited many locations the world over. Throughout her life, some of Sharon’s favorite things included flowers, puffins, cherry coke, and cherry pie.
The family extends special appreciation to Sharon's dear friend Kay Brown for her loving companionship and support as well as her many missionaries that continued to visit and care for her till the very end. The celebration of Sharon's life will include a casual open house on Monday, June 24th, from 7:00 - 9:00 PM at 4707 W Bridle Creek Dr, West Jordan. Parking is available at the church next door to the west. A graveside service for those who wish to attend will be held at Larkin Sunset Gardens in Sandy on Tuesday, June 25th, at 10:30 AM.
Her legacy of love, laughter, and service will forever be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
