Sherrill Preston Shurtleff

Sherrill Preston Shurtleff , 95, died peacefully Sunday February 3, 2008, in Orem, Utah, with his daughter, Sharilyn, holding his hand. He was born October 20, 1912, in Logan, Utah, to Arnold Riley and Ruth Richardson Shurtleff. He was the 4th of 9 children.
The family later lived in Salt Lake City and then Alameda, California, where Dad went to school and grew up. The family later moved to Oakland, California, where Dad met our future mother, Gladys Daybell of Utah, who was visiting her sister in Oakland. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on June 29, 1938 and had 3 children whom they raised in Oakland. Mom died in 1984 and in 1985 Dad married Blanche Phipps. She died in 2003. Dad then moved to Orem, Utah, where he spent his remaining years.
Dad held numerous positions in scouting in his Oakland LDS ward as well as the district level and had Woodbadge training at the Philmont Scout Ranch. He was also a stake missionary and a worker in the Oakland Temple. For a number of years before and after marriage he worked for UPS. During WWII he worked at Moore's shipyard, then the Oakland airport, both jobs aiding the war effort. He later trained as an electrician and worked at the E.O. Lawrence Laboratory in Livermore, California, for over 20 years until his retirement. Dad had many skills and could make or repair about anything and made a number of changes and additions to our home over the years to make things more comfortable for his family.
He is survived by his three children: Philip Sherrill (Elaine) of Orem; Allan Ray ( Jan) of Castro Valley, California; and Sharilyn Gladys (Kay) Watson, of Provo, as well as younger brother, Chet, of Yuma, Arizona; and 15 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wives, 7 siblings, and one great-grandchild.
The family is very appreciative of the special care he received at the Canyon Breeze Senior Living center during the last years of his life. Funeral services will be Saturday February 9, 2008, at 11 a.m. in the Grandview Third Ward chapel, 960 W. 2150 N. ( East of State St. off Carterville Rd. at 2150 N.), Provo, Utah. A viewing will be held prior to the funeral from 9:30 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. Burial will be in the Ogden City Cemetery. Condolences can be sent online at www.serenicare.com.
