Val Leonard Smith, beloved husband and father, passed away on June 18th, 2007 at home in Layton, Utah.
Val was born July 17, 1940 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Leland Smith and Fern Winger. He graduated from South High School in 1959, and entered the United States Navy where he served until 1963. During his service, he was involved in the Cuban Missile crisis, and was able to contribute to a successful resolution there.
Val married Viola Ebert, in 1961 in the Salt Lake Temple. After completing his naval service, he worked as a civil servant at the Hill Air Force Base Air Freight Terminal until 1990.
Val was a loving father, and successfully raised a daughter and five sons. He is survived by his wife, Viola, their children Brent Val (Lisa), Janet Chesnut (Troy), Steven, and Scott, his brother Darrell (Susie) and stepbrother David (Diana), and ten grand-children that he loved and adored. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leland and Fern, a brother Monte Smith, and a son David Smith.
Val enjoyed many recreational and educational pursuits, including camping, traveling, and studying history.
A viewing will be held Friday, June 22, 2007 at the Layton West Stake Center, 1715 West 1600 North from 6pm to 8pm. Graveside services will be held at Layton Lindquist at 1867 North Fairfield Rd, Layton at 11 a.m.
