Van B Hales

Van B Hales 1928-2011, passed away of natural causes Monday, March 1 in St. George, Utah. He was born September 20, 1928 in Kaysville, Utah.
Van was an active life long member of the LDS Church. He especially enjoyed his opportunities to teach in his quorums and serve as financial clerk in both ward and stake capacities. Van had a great knowledge of the scriptures and enjoyed reading and studying the writings of many church scholars. He was one of 13 missionaries leaving from the Yale Ward at the same time in 1948 and served in the Hawaiian Mission. Following his church mission, Van served for four years in the U.S. Air Force in Texas, Ohio, and Florida where he reached the rank of Staff Sergeant in the Chaplin service. He attended both Brigham Young University and the University of Utah and his career included 14 years teaching in the Granite School District, and in business in the insurance field and in the travel industry.
Van was an active hiker and swimmer and enjoyed many of these activities with his family. He traveled often to visit his brothers and sisters and particularly enjoyed activities with his many nieces and nephews. He was also an accomplished trombonist and played for many years in high school, on his mission, and in other musical groups. His love and appreciation for classical music was rivaled only by his passion for BYU sports.
He was preceded in death by his parents Lynn and Eleanor Peterson Hales, and siblings Ronale and Mary Ann Johanson (Bob- deceased). He is survived by his sisters Lynore Clark (Ralph), Martha Ball (Jay - deceased), and brothers Kent (Janet) and Jon (Judy) and six nieces and fourteen nephews.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Richard King Mower and the Hospice staff in St. George, Utah (Barbara Thorn and Brian Steenson) that enabled Van's last days to be peaceful and comfortable.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, March 5, 2011 at noon at the Kaysville Cemetery, Kaysville, Utah. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in the name of Van Hales to the Utah Symphony, 123 W. South Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah 84101.
